How to maintain your sump pump?

October 16, 2014

super sump pumpSump pumps are typically used in a basement situation in a bid to clear water away. If you have a sump pump you know they tend to be quite reliable.

Traditionally there are two main types of pump; pedestal and submersible. Both should be maintained as best possible in an attempt to avoid breakdown. If you need a bit of advice, here are a few tips on maintaining your sump pump:

How do you maintain a sump pump?

You should ensure that the vent hole in the discharge pipe is clear; helping to ensure the pump continues to work at its optimum level.

The pump should always be standing upright. On occasion they can fall or tilt jamming the float arm so the pump will not activate.

Debris like dirt, gravel, and sand ought to be removed; this should increase the length of time the pump will work for. In addition to improving its efficiency, these are recommended to be checked at least once a year.

Another maintenance hint would be to change the battery pack on compatible pumps to ensure that even during power cuts the pump will continue to work.

You can always check the performance of your pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pit which should activate the pump; if not you should get it serviced.

If there is anything that does go wrong with your sump pump then there are typically alarms built in to alert you of any problems e.g. if the battery runs out, or water is building up.
