Cellar waterproofing
If you are considering a cellar conversion then it is absolutely vital that your cellar is waterproof. As cellars tend to lie below the water table they are therefore vulnerable to the pressure of water and moisture against the walls and floor. As this pressure builds the masonry will begin to crack as it cannot bend and water will flow into the cellar. Even a small crack can allow a large volume of water into the cellar.
If water were to get into your newly converted cellar then your decorations, upholstery and other furniture could be at risk from water damage. On top of this, damp or wet conditions allow dry rot and wet rot to thrive and provide household pests an environment in which they thrive.
Options for cellar waterproofing
Cellar waterproofing options vary from a blend of traditional to modern cellar waterproofing systems and techniques. In most cases you will find that it would have been a traditional method such as cellar tanking or an exterior cellar waterproofing that was originally installed when the cellar was constructed and that it was this system that has failed. Although these systems can be repaired it is not recommended because if the problem happens once there is nothing to stop it reoccurring.
Modern cellar waterproofing
Modern cellar waterproofing systems work differently from traditional systems that attempt to prevent water from entering the cellar which allows for a build up of water pressure against the cellar walls. Modern cellar waterproofing systems control the water by channelling it using drainage systems such as WaterGuard and DryTrak in combination with advanced air gap wall waterproofing membranes. The water is channelled either safely downhill out of your property if possible or to a sump pump. Our sump pumps are below floor level which allows them to collect water from the ground below the building which effectively lowers the level of the water table and eases the pressure on the cellar.
