How to waterproof a basement

Ask a question

Stuart McGinlay, one of our water management specialists at Wise Basement Systems shows us in the video above how to waterproof a basement from start to finish.

The basement in question was a classic example of a wet, under-pavement basement. The water was leaking through the wall-joints rendering the basements useless. The team at Wise Basement Systems installed a wall waterproofing system and a floor waterproofing system which directed the water to an outside drain using the patented Water Guard drainage system.

After the job, Stuart talks to the client to see what she thinks about the basement waterproofing job.

How to waterproof a basement – steps required

Step 1:

The first stage of the process is to organise a basement & cellar survey in which the surveyor will find out what the problem is and the water leakage is occurring. The surveyor will find out where the lowest point of the basement or cellar is so that he knows where to direct the water.

Step 2:

The Wise Basement Systems technicians will install a membrane on the walls and roof of the basement. The membrane will direct water into the basement drainage system. In the case of this basement waterproofing job it was necessary to remove the door during this process so that no water can enter the basement this way. The door was then reinstalled and is now water tight.

Step 3:

A basement wall waterproofing system such as Clean Space or a cavity wall membrane will be installed. Wall waterproofing systems are required to ensure that any water is channelled away from the basement and helps to give the basement a finished look to it.

Step 4:

The next step is to install a basement drainage system which will direct any water safely away from the basement to outside the basement (if possible) or to a sump pump.

Step 5:

Finally, if your basement floor is cold, hard, or damp a floor waterproofing system should be installed. This system will ensure that any of your belongings that are placed on the floor remain dry and safe.
